The lunch program
VES is very proud of our lunch program. Since 2010, we have funded lunches for all the children at our kindergartens whose parents cannot afford the monthly lunch fee. Almost all of our VES kindergartens have kitchens and vegetable gardens. Staff members prepare a nutritious lunch and afternoon meal for the children daily.
The program’s impact
VES now pays for school lunches for over 400 children every year. The school lunch program has a huge impact on these youngsters. Almost all kindergarten students at our VES kindergartens do not get enough to eat at home; around half start the school year malnourished.
The children are weighed and measured at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the school year. By the middle of the year, two-thirds of those who began the year malnourished are no longer. By the end of the school year almost all the children are on track for weight and height for their ages. Good nutrition is so important for the cognitive and physical development of young children. The lunch program changes lives for the better!
