About the community
Hướng Linh commune is one of six communes spread out over 15 kilometres of mountainous terrain in northern Hướng Hóa district in Quảng Trị province. The main town in this district is Khe Sanh which, in 1968, was the site of one of the most significant and deadly battles of the Vietnam War. The people are of the Van Kieu ethnic minority. They are subsistence farmers primarily growing cassava and maize. People are very poor and the commune lacks good basic infrastructure.
Helping the children succeed
Over 60 children attend Miệt Pa Công kindergarten. The poverty in the area means that many children begin the school year malnourished. VES began its lunch program in 2023 and it has already had a significant impact in improving the health of the children.
Funding & construction
In 2022, VES, with generous funding from the Ptarmigan Foundation, constructed a kindergarten between two of the commune’s hamlets, Miệt and Pa Công. The Miệt Pa Công kindergarten has two rooms with washroom and storage facilities. In 2024, the Ptarmigan Foundation also funded a gate and concrete fencing around the school property. Local artists volunteered their time to paint the fencing.
