About the community
Ba Tầng commune is composed of seven hamlets with a total population of just under 4,000 people. The main ethnic group is Van Kieu although some people are of the Pa Co ethnic group and some others are Kinh (the dominant Vietnamese ethnic group). Both the district as a whole, and Ba Tầng commune are very poor. The local economy is based primarily on farming cassava, rice and corn.
Helping the children succeed
Many primary schools in rural Vietnam do not have proper libraries. In Hướng Hóa district of Quảng Trị province, one-quarter of the primary schools need libraries. Most of the primary school libraries that do exist do not have adequate shelving and do not have enough books. Ba Tầng primary and lower secondary school is a large school with almost 1,000 students in total when the main and satellite schools are included. The school has trained library staff but it did not have a proper library.
Funding & construction
The Ba Tầng primary and lower secondary school library was completed in April 2024. It was funded by Pixel Dreams, a Toronto creative agency, its CEO Khalid Mokhtarzada and his wife and business partner Lan Lê, their staff, friends and family. Thank you, Khalid, Lan and Pixel Dreams!!
