Tà Rùng Kindergarten, Quảng Trị Province

Húc Commune, Hướng Hóa District

About the community

Húc Commune is made up of nine hamlets and a population of 3,687 people spread over a relatively large area. Over half of the population is classified as very poor. Residents primarily make their living from farming but the terrain is mountainous which makes agriculture challenging. The people are of three ethnic groups: Van Kieu, Pa Co and Kinh.

Helping the children succeed

Before the VES kindergarten, some children studied in very poor conditions and others did not attend school at all. Many more children began attending kindergarten as soon as the new kindergarten opened. This is a very poor part of rural Vietnam and about 40% of the children at this kindergarten begin the school year malnourished. VES implemented a lunch program which has made a big difference to these children’s health.

Funding & construction

In 2017, VES built Tà Rùng hamlet two new spacious kindergarten classrooms with electricity and fans, washroom facilities and storage space. This US$55,000 school is a vast improvement over the previous temporary spaces the teachers had been using. Shortly after the kindergarten was completed, VES funded a kitchen for the school.
